HOUSTON (ICIS)--US phenol imports increased by more than 26% in September compared with the same month last year, according to the US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Tuesday.

September imports totalled 4,923 tonnes versus 3,894 tonnes in September 2012, reflecting continued low phenol operating rates, but some improvement in domestic demand from one year ago.

However, imports fell off sharply from the previous month, likely on the beginning of a seasonal downturn. In August, the US imported 8,712 tonnes of phenol, about 43% more than in September, with Canada as the primary source of that material.

In September, exports dropped by almost 18%, with 5,423 tonnes shipped versus 6,608 tonnes one year ago.

Major US phenol producers include Axiall, Dow Chemical, Haverhill Chemical, Honeywell, INEOS Phenol, SABIC Innovative Plastics and Shell Chemical.
