MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) produced 876,000 tonnes of petrochemical products in October, up by about 16% from 757,000 tonnes in the prior-year month, the state-run energy company said on Monday.

Accumulated petrochemical output in the January-October period reached 9.62m tonnes, an increase of about 7.2% from 8.97m tonnes a year ago, the company said.

For the month, Pemex produced some 73,000 tonnes of ethylene, down by 9.9% year on year, and 37,000 tonnes of propylene, up by 2.8%.

Production of high density polyethylene (HDPE) reached 9,000 tonnes, flat compared with a year ago, while output of low density PE (LDPE) and linear low density PE (LLDPE) fell by 20% to 20,000 tonnes and 26% to 14,000 tonnes, respectively.

Production of ethylene oxide (EO), a raw material used for glycols and detergents, was up by 27% to 19,000 tonnes, while output of ammonia increased by 81% to 76,000 tonnes.

The company more than doubled toluene production at 13,000 tonnes, while styrene was up 60% to 8,000 tonnes of styrene. Benzene was flat year on year at 6,000 tonnes.

Production of other petrochemicals increased by 22% to 601,000 tonnes.

As from 13 September, Pemex has been unable to provide its own production figures for vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and ethylene dichloride (EDC), raw materials for the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), due to a joint venture agreement signed with Mexican chemicals producer Mexichem last month.

The project is expected to boost VCM capacity at the Pajaritos petrochemical complex in the southern Mexican state of Veracruz from current levels of 200,000 tonnes/year to around 400,000 tonnes/year by September 2015.
