HOUSTON (ICIS)--Canadian energy infrastructure firm Enbridge on Tuesday launched an open season to solicit commitments from shippers on its planned pipeline project to expand takeaway capacity for crude oil from North Dakota’s Bakken region.

The binding open season commitment period will end on 24 January 2014.

Enbridge said earlier that Marathon Petroleum will be the project’s anchor shipper.

The $2.6bn (€1.9bn) Sandpiper Project will expand Enbridge’s North Dakota Bakken shale oil takeaway capacity by 225,000 bbl/day to 580,000 bbl/day after coming into service in early 2016.

“The project, in connection with the [existing] Lakehead pipeline system, will provide access to premium markets in the Midwest and eastern Canada,” Enbridge said.
