GRANGEMOUTH, SCOTLAND (ICIS)--Switzerland-headquartered producer INEOS confirmed on Monday that it is to close the G4 naphtha cracker at its Grangemouth, UK facility by the second quarter of 2015.

Several downstream units at the site are also slated for closure, according to INEOS Petrochemicals UK chairman, Calum MacLean.

A benzene unit is to close by the end of this year, while a butadiene unit is to close by the first quarter of 2015. No material job losses are expected from the closures, MacLean added.

The cracker has a nameplate capacity of 320,000 tonnes/year according to ICIS, while the benzene unit is rated at 295,000 tonnes/year and the butadiene extraction plant at 71,000 tonnes/year

Meanwhile, the company is planning to bring its natural gas liquids KG cracker at the site back up to full capacity. One train of the 700,000 tonne/year unit has been mothballed since 2008, and the unit is currently operating at around half capacity, MacLean said.

Steps to bring the mothballed train back online are expected to begin late in the first quarter of next year, the company said.
