SINGAPORE (ICIS)--An explosion occurred at Mitsubishi Materials’ 2,800 tonne/year polysilicon unit in Japan on Thursday afternoon, resulting in casualties and injuries, a company spokesperson said.
The explosion at the plant located in Yokkaichi occurred at around 14:00 Japan time (05:00 GMT), the spokesperson told ICIS.
According to Reuters, 17 people sustained injuries from the blast, five of them in serious condition.
“We received information that some people have died and some were injured and we are now collecting the information,” the Mitsubishi Materials spokesperson said.
The plant’s polysilicon output is primarily for semiconductor production, the spokesperson said.
