HOUSTON (ICIS)--US imports of butadiene (BD) in November 2013 fell 33% year on year on overseas market tightness, according to data released on Thursday.
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) said November 2013 BD imports were 34,307 tonnes, down from 50,961 tonnes in November 2012.
The drop came as Europe and Asia experienced supply tightness stemming from production issues.
Additionally, seasonally weak US demand pushed prices lower, closing the arbitrage window for overseas sellers.
This also helped push down month on month imports, which dropped 12% from 38,895 tonnes in October 2013.
BD exports in November 2013 were 4,102 tonnes, up by 70% from 2,419 tonnes in November 2012, but down by 28% from 5,683 tonnes in October 2013.
Major US BD producers include ExxonMobil, LyondellBasell, Shell Chemical and TPC Group.
