HOUSTON (ICIS)--US November 2013 exports of maleic anhydride (MA) fell 17% year on year, according to data released on Thursday.
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) said November 2013 MA exports were 4,027 tonnes, down from 4,834 tonnes in November 2012.
The decline came as the US market was tight, owing to production issues in the second and third quarters.
This led producers to restock inventories and outweighed a continued cost advantage for US material, which is based on cheaper butane prices, rather than benzene.
Month on month, however, MA exports rose by 30% from 3,095 tonnes in October 2013 as the cost advantage was coupled with steady demand.
Year to date, US MA exports through November 2013 were down by 22% at 40,883 tonnes from 52,645 tonnes.
Major US MA producers include Ashland, Flint Hills Resources, Huntsman and LANXESS.
