HOUSTON (ICIS)--US-based fuels and renewable chemicals firm Aemetis has successfully upgraded its 50m gal/year biodiesel and refined glycerine plant in Kakinada, India, to produce high-quality distilled biodiesel, it said on Tuesday.

The completion of the upgrade would allow Aemetis to “significantly” expand production levels in order to supply European and India biodiesel customers, it said.

According to Aemetis, the plant is India’s only distilled biodiesel facility. It will be able to produce biodiesel that meets EU standards, the company added.

Built in 2008, the plant uses low-cost, non-food by-products from the edible oil industry as feedstock. It supplies customers in the biofuel, pharmaceutical, and industrial markets.

“The new distillation production unit is fully commissioned and the India facility now produces biodiesel meeting or exceeding the highest standards for biodiesel quality worldwide,” added Sanjeev Gupta, managing director of Aemetis’ subsidiary in India.
