TORONTO (ICIS)--SNC-Lavalin has opened a regional office in Abu Dhabi to support its business in the Middle East and Africa, the Canada-based international energy and chemicals engineering firm said on Wednesday.

SNC said that with an estimated 5.6%/year GDP growth through 2018 and major projects in infrastructure, energy, mining and chemicals, the Middle East offered "significant development opportunities" for the company.

"This is a target region for [SNC’s] activities, and the opening of this regional head office is an indication of our intention to expand our activities and make important contributions in this region," said CEO Robert Card.

The new Abu Dhabi office will be led by Ziad Awad, senior vice president and regional head for the Middle East and Africa. SNC has more than 3,000 employees working on various projects across the Middle East and Africa, it said.

The opening of the office coincides with a $500m contract SNC won this week to work on a big sulphuric acid plant in Saudi Arabia.
