HOUSTON (ICIS)--US total 2013 butadiene (BD) production was down 2.8% year on year, according to data released by the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) on Thursday.
US total finished BD production in 2013 was 3.09bn lb (1.40m tonnes), down from 3.18bn lb in 2012.
Much of the decline stemmed from US crackers focusing on lighter feeds, leading to less production of finished BD.
BD demand was also steady at best for most of 2013, further keeping production from being ramped up.
2013 fourth-quarter BD production was 787.3m lb, up from 773.3m lb in Q3 2013 but down from 803.8m lb produced in Q4 2012.
Finished BD inventories were 78.7m lb in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to the AFPM, down from 122.1m lb in the third quarter of 2013 and 145.4m lb for Q4 2012.
Companies that contributed to the BD data included BASF, ExxonMobil, INEOS, LyondellBasell, Shell Chemical and TPC Group.
