SINGAPORE (ICIS)-- Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals (SSMC) will shut its 120,000 tonne/year bisphenol A (BPA) plant in Shanghai in mid-March because of a shortage of feedstock, a company source said on Friday.

The feedstock phenol and acetone are supplied by Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical.

“Considering Shanghai Gaoqiao Petrochemical will shut its phenol-acetone plants in March, there will be a shortage of the feedstock, and we are planning to shut the BPA plant and conduct the maintenance,” the source said.

“The maintenance of the BPA plant will last for about 45 days,” the source added.

The shutdown may cause BPA prices in the domestic market to increase further because of the short supply of BPA, a market player said.
