LONDON (ICIS)--Exports of benzene from the EU to other regions were down by over 80% year on year in December 2013, data from European statistics agency Eurostat showed on Wednesday.

Imports into the EU were also down year on year in December 2013, and down from the previous month by just over 6,000 tonnes.

The sharp drop in export volumes was largely a reflection of higher European benzene numbers amid some production problems limiting any arbitrage opportunities in December 2013, as well as soaring US spot prices in December 2012 supporting a sharp jump in exports out of the EU at that time.
