TOKYO (ICIS)--Japan’s production of 13 out of 18 primary chemicals increased in January from the previous month, the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association (JPCA) said on Tuesday.

However, output of four of the other five chemicals decreased from December, the JPCA said.

On a year-on-year basis, production of 15 chemicals increased, while three products saw a decline in output, according to the association.

Production of ethylene increased by 4% month on month, and rose by 12% year on year to 644,100 tonnes in January, JPCA’s official data showed.

The average operating rate of the country’s naphtha crackers was 93% in January, up from 90% in December, and an increase from 84% in January 2013, according to the association.

Output of low density polyethylene (LDPE) declined by 1% in January to 146,300 tonnes from the previous month, but rose by 6% from the corresponding period a year earlier, the data showed.

Production of high density polyethylene (HDPE) increased by 17% month on month to 86,300 tonnes, but decreased by 4% year on year, while output of polypropylene (PP) was up by 14% month on month, and increased by 14% year on year to 245,300 tonnes, based on the statistics.

The country produced 238,500 tonnes of styrene monomer (SM) in January, the same level as a month earlier, while this was a 5% increase from the same time a year before, according to JPCA.
