HOUSTON (ICIS)--US linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) exports for Jan 2014 increased by 39% from the same month in 2013, according to data available from the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday.

Exports of LLDPE rose to 75,670 tonnes in Jan 2014 from 54,402 tonnes in 2013.

Mexico, China and Belgium purchased the most LLDPE from the US, with Mexico taking 32% of exports for a total of 24,124 tonnes, which represented a 16% increase from the 20,778 tonnes the country took during the same month in 2013.

China took in five times the amount it took in January 2013 for a total of 14,108 tonnes in January 2014. Belgium took more than four times the amount it took for the same month of 2013, for a total of 7,950 tonnes.

The strong export month for polyethylene continues a trend of very strong exports that began in December 2013, which many sources said was one of the strongest export months in recent history.

US low density polyethylene (LDPE) exports for January increased by 5.8% from the same month in 2013, rising to 66,274 tonnes from 62,636 tonnes.

The top three destinations for US material were Canada, Mexico and China, together taking 53% of exports. Exports to Canada fell slightly, while exports to Mexico and China grew.

US high density polyethylene (HDPE) exports decreased by 18% year on year in January, falling to 151,986 tonnes in 2014 from 185,516 tonnes in January 2013, according to the ITC.

Mexico, Canada and Brazil were the top destinations for US material, together accounting for 64% of all US exports.  Exports increased to Mexico and Brazil, but fell to Canada.

Part of the decrease in HDPE exports is likely attributable to tight supply caused by a number of plant outages in January.

Major US PE producers include Chevron Phillips Chemical, LyondellBasell, Dow Chemical, ExxonMobil, Westlake, INEOS, Total, Nova Chemicals and Formosa Plastics.
