HOUSTON (ICIS)--US acetone exports for January rose 27% to 13,107 tonnes from 10,343 tonnes in January 2013, according to data made available Monday from the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Exports went primarily to China, which took 5,007 tonnes, and to Mexico, which took 4,534 tonnes. Those volumes accounted for 73% of total US acetone exports during the month. Rounding out the top four export destinations were Peru and Chile, which received slightly more than 1,100 tonnes each.

Import volumes continue substantially lesser than exports, but in January volumes totalled 2,858 tonnes – 96% from South Africa – compared to 1,597 tonnes imported during January 2013.

That year-over-year increase of 79% reflects more buying interest, sources said, but some of that may have been prompted by attractive import pricing.

Major US acetone producers include Axiall, Haverhill Chemical, Honeywell, INEOS Phenol and Shell Chemical.
