HOUSTON (ICIS)--US phenol imports fell 50% in January to 4,611 tonnes from 9,142 tonnes in January 2013, according to data made available on Monday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
The source of most imported material was Canada, which shipped 3,029 tonnes, or 66% of all US imports, in January, followed by Mexico, which shipped 1,028 tonnes during the first month of 2014.
The weaker numbers reflected continued weak phenol economics in the US, even as export activity remained nearly static year over year.
Exports totalled 6,864 tonnes in January versus 7,075 tonnes one year ago, a decline of just 3%. The primary destinations were Canada, whose year-over-year volume increased by nearly 600 tonnes, and Mexico, which took slightly less product during the first month of this year, according to the ITC.
Major US phenol producers include Axiall, Dow Chemical, Haverhill Chemical, Honeywell, INEOS Phenol, SABIC Innovative Plastics and Shell Chemical.
