HOUSTON (ICIS)--US tank barge operator Kirby has signed agreements for the construction of 29 additional barges, with delivery scheduled throughout 2014, it said in a statement released late Monday.
The barges, with a total capacity of 830,000 barrels, will cost about $81m.
Kirby said that the barges would help it meet "volume requirements driven by strong and expanding movements of crude oil and natural gas condensate, as well as new demand from expansions in the petrochemical and refining industries."
The orders for the 29 barges are in addition to Kirby’s previously announced construction during 2014 of 37 inland tank barges with a total capacity of 390,000 barrels, it said.
The Houston-based company is described as the largest domestic tank barge operator in the US. The company transports petrochemicals, oil, refined petroleum products and agricultural chemicals by tank barge.
