LONDON (ICIS)--High density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe players in Europe are digesting the news of the €15/tonne drop in the April ethylene monomer contract, sources said on Thursday.

Ethylene contract price for April was settled on 26 March at €1,165/tonne.

“We will try to keep the monomer,” said one producer.

“I have forecast that we will follow the monomer,” said a large buyer, clearly expecting its April prices to fall by €15/tonne, in line with the monomer.

Most sources said it was too early to tell where April HDPE pipe prices would land, but few expected any significant change.

Demand is continuing normally, according to many sources, and some converters said they expected it only to strengthen as seasonal aspects come into play.

The wider HDPE sector saw higher spot prices this week. HDPE film and blowmoulding low-end prices had been languishing below €1,200/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe), but this week these levels were higher, at €1,210-1,220/tonne FD NWE.
