Celanese boosts acrylic acid, butyl acrylate at Bohlen

LONDON (CNI)--German company Celanese Chemicals announced on Friday that three new plants have come onstream at Bohlen near Leipzig, Germany as part of a manufacturing and sales alliance with a Dow-controlled company Buna Sow Leuna Olefinverbund (BSL).

Under the agreement, Celanese will operate the BSL-owned units, which produce 80 000 tonne/year crude acrylic acid, plus pure acrylic acid and butyl acrylate. Celanese is sole external marketer of product from the units. The plants are modelled on Celanese technology used at the German company's acrylic acid units in Clear Lake, Texas.

A spokeswoman for Celanese said that the company will take half the output from the 80 000 tonne/year crude acrylic acid unit, and Dow will take the other half for it downstream derivatives, such as superabsorbents and emulsion polymers.

Output from the new pure acrylic acid and butyl acrylate units will depend on their relative demand, she said. No details were available on the share arrangements for these products.

In a statement, Celanese said the co-operation with Dow would help boost its strength in European acrylic acid and acrylates.

Dow holds 80% of BSL and BvS, the German privatisation agency, holds the remainder.
