LONDON (CNI)--French chemicals group AtoFina said Monday it plans to add 230 000 tonne (500 million lb)/year of new impact polystyrene (PS) capacity at its Carville complex in Louisiana, US.

AtoFina declined to quantify the capital investment involved or given any other financial details. However, it said in a statement that the 44% expansion should be online by mid-2002.

Like the existing 520 000 tonne PS plant at Carville, the extra capacity will be integrated with the 1m tonne/year styrene unit at the site which is owned by the AtoFina/GE Plastics joint venture.

AtoFina's current total global PS capacity is 1.07m tonne/year. In addition to the Carville site, it has 480 000 tonne/year of PS capacity in Europe and 70 000 tonne/year in Singapore.
