SINGAPORE (CNI)--The port of Ningbo in China's Zhejiang province
saw a 50% increase in the volume of chemicals it handled in the
first half of 2002 compared to the same period last year, according
to the official Xinhua News Agency.
The increase to 882 000 tonne of chemicals handled
was mainly due to a 34% increase in the number of vessels carrying
chemicals which docked at the port in H1-2002.
Ningbo port is one of several ports in China with a handling
capacity of over 100m tonne/year. Nearly 700 vessels docked at the
port every month this year, of which 300 were in transit.
The agency reported a total of 4086 ships docked in H1-2002 - a
21% increase compared to the same period last year.
Ningbo port administration recently introduced a pre-inspection
scheme to reduce the time taken for docking at the port. It also
offered a 24-hour weather service to visiting ships.
The agency added that leading global shipping companies
had committed their sixth-generation container ships, considered
the most modern in the world, to dock at Ningbo.
