LONDON
(CNI)--Finnish chemicals firm Kemira said Friday it will expand the
production capacity of specialty anatase grade titanium dioxide
(Ti02) products at its Pori, Finland plant. It is also investing
in a new packaging system.
The expansion, which
will cost about Euro8m ($9.4m), is due for completion in December
2004. It will bring the Pori plant's capacity to 130 000
tonne/year, said Olli-Pekka Antinluoma, vice president of the
specialty products unit. Current capacity is understood to be about
120 000 tonne/year.
The expansion
involves new production machinery and a new packaging machine
system, said Kemira. New facilities, separate from the rest of
production, will be built for these purposes, it added.
The Pori plant
currently employs about 800 people.
Harri Kerminen,
executive vice president of industrial chemicals business, said the
investment supports Kemira' strategy for pigments.
Its aim is to become
the global leader and supplier of Ti02 products in selected product
application areas, such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food
industries.
Antinluoma pointed
out that requirements for the purity of products supplied to the
food and
drug industry are constantly being
tightened. He said the investments at Pori would help
Kemira guarantee to meet future product purity
requirements.
