Solvay to increase France soda ash production

NICE (ICIS news)--Global chlor-alkali producer Solvay said on Wednesday it plans to increase production of ultra-pure soda ash at it Dombasle site in France.

Solvay produces the pharmaceutical-grade soda ash at the facility in France and in Rheinberg, Germany.

The expansion at the plant, which will result in a “significantly increased” capacity for the specialty product, is due to be complete during the third quarter 2007, Solvay said.

The company did not disclose financial details of the investment at the site, or capacity information.

Ultra-pure soda ash is used in medicinal products such as effervescent tablets, and also the formulation of food and chemical specialities. 

“The market has experienced solid growth as the general trend for pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs producers is to integrate more and more sophisticated ingredients,” a spokesperson for Solvay said on the sidelines of the World Soda Ash conference in Nice.

The World Soda Ash conference began on Tuesday and ends on Friday.
