ICIS CHEMICAL Business magazine has branched out to Turkey with its local-language version, ICIS Chemical Business Türkiye.
Launched on August 1, ICIS Chemical Business Türkiye will be published bi-weekly and distributed to industrialists, businessmen and scientists working in the chemical and petrochemical industries.
Currently, there are around 15 national and local magazines in Turkey that cover general economic and business issues, and most are published monthly or quarterly. Few, however, specialize in chemicals, and global content is limited.
ICIS Chemical Business Türkiye aims to fill that vital information gap. It has adopted its global parent's motto: "Regional intelligence global analysis."
The magazine's mix of global and local content will provide a window through which Turkish industrialists can view the outside world.
Content will be taken, in part, from its parent magazine, ICIS Chemical Business, while the rest will be supplied by Turkish specialist writers.
"The initial reactions to the proposed content and design have been very positive," says publishing director Sinan Kilic. "We are excited by the prospects of publishing ICIS Chemical Business Türkiye. With its reader-friendly page layout, articles that have been rigorously researched, and comments that provide in-depth insights new ideas and a large, global scope to its readers, this will be a magazine that no one working in the field of chemistry in Turkey can afford to ignore," says Kilic. "A couple of articles featured in our first issue were also covered in the Turkish media. However, both the amount and type of coverage offered by the press was pretty sparse," says Guzin Caner, the editor in chief of ICIS Chemical Business Türkiye.
"We feel that we will really fill a gap in this area. The Turkish chemical industry is very dynamic. It would wish to develop and expand its ınterests beyond the domestic market. To achieve this, it needs a reliable and timely reports of events in the outside world."
Caner describes the new magazine as "the industry's eyes and ears." For instance, she says: "We will have features on China and India in forthcoming issues. I am sure that chemical industry people and trade professionals who are not satisfied with the mainstream media and existing publications will closely follow our magazine."
After November 15, the magazine will only be distributed to subscribers. In the interim period, free trials will be sent to as many people as possible within professional organizations, chemical companies (producers, traders and distributors) and people interested in the chemical field (academics, researchers and students).
To date, there are more than 1,000 potential subscribers. Caner adds that to increase awareness of the magazine, a series of adverts will be published in two national business daily publications during the week following the release of each issue, with complimentary copies released to influential columnists, correspondents and business journalists on Turkey's main daily newspapers.
ICIS Chemical Business magazine, headquartered in New York, has licensed its brand and global content to publisher Cicek Oztek. She says that the partnership will allow her Istanbul-based team to supply editorial content to its global parent, ICIS Chemical Business in the near future.
"Our magazine will provide a reciprocal information flow between the Turkish and global chemical industry scenes.
"The magazine will not only be the eyes and ears, but also the mouth of Turkish chemistry people" she says.
Penny Wilson, London-based global editorial director, ICIS Chemical Business, says the partner- ship was a first for ICIS's magazine business and "a welcome move into local language publications under the ICIS brand." ICIS has now added Istanbul to its mushrooming bureaus and 100- strong network of journalists supplying editorial content and information from all corners of the globe to the world's largest chemical information provider.
