EU ready to talk to US over climate change deal

PARIS (ICIS news)--The EU is ready to discuss new proposals for a binding international agreement on cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions after Washington said it was keen to reach a new deal as soon as possible, environment commissioner Stavros Dimas said on Monday.

"The US is prepared to enter into binding international obligations to reduce GHGs as part of a global agreement in which all major economies similarly undertake binding international obligations," a White House spokesman said on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Dimas said that the commissioner was talking to US authorities - and all of Europe's international partners at the UN - about a new post-2012 agreement that would include the entire international community.

"We have a number of working groups looking at this and the commissioner is on his way to the US to discuss an international agreement," she said.
