US ethanol production up 39% in Feb to 631m gal

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US ethanol production in February totalled 631m gal (2.389 bn litres), a 39% jump from 453m gal a year earlier, according to Energy Information Administration (EIA) figures available on Thursday.

Production in February fell by 5% from 664m gal in January.

US imports of fuel ethanol in February were at 20.3m gal, down by 48% from 39.4m gal a year earlier and down by 2.4% from 20.8m gal in January.

The US had 147 ethanol plants in operation in April, with the capacity to produce 8.5bn gal/year of the biofuel, according to the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA).

US capacity could increase by 5bn gal with the construction of another 55 plants and the expansion of six facilities, the RFA has estimated.
