Methanol Institute raises alarm about pirates

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The Methanol Institute (MI) urged the UN on Friday to extend a resolution aimed at thwarting pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden and offshore Somalia.

In a letter to the UN, MI president John Lynn expressed support for the extension of Resolution 1816, which would allow private security firms to aid in the anti-pirate efforts.

The resolution is set to expire on the first day of December.

According to the International Maritime Bureau, 199 piracy incidents were reported worldwide during January-September, of which 63 were in the Gulf of Aden and the Somalia coast.

Lynn expressed concern over the recurring acts of privacy, saying, “Maintaining safe passage along international shipping lanes is essential to public safety and the global methanol industry.”
