LONDON (CNI)--BASF announced Friday that it plans to build a 70
000 tonne/year plant to produce superabsorbents in Guarantigueta,
Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The new plant would represent a 50% increase in BASF's annual
capacity for superabsorbents used in diapers and other non-woven
products. It is scheduled to come on stream in 2002 and employ new
technology developed by the German chemicals giant. No details were
given.
BASF is already building a $30m (Euro28m) butyl acrylate plant
in Guarantigueta to meet the demand for acrylic acid and
dispersions used in the coatings and non-woven textile sectors. The
plant is due on stream in 2001. A spokesman said that BASF is still
considering whether to build a glacial acrylic acid plant at the
expanding complex.
The group believes that investments will give it a strong
position in Brazil and the developing Mercosur trade area. It said:
"BASF sees this investment in Brazil as an important step towards
further globalisation of the superabsorbents business."
