Further delays expected for UAE’s FERTIL-2 fertilizer plant

ICIS News : 17-Apr-13 16:00

LONDON (ICIS)--United Arab Emirates-based fertilizer producer Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (Fertil) expects further delays to the start-up of its FERTIL-2 urea/ammonia plant because of technical issues, a company official told ICIS on Wednesday.

Ammonia production at the plant, which is being built at a cost of $1.2bn (€912m), is now likely to begin by mid-May and urea by mid-June although there could be further delays in the project, the official added.

Production was initially expected to begin at the end of January.

FERTIL-2 will produce 2,000 tonnes/day of ammonia and 3,500 tonnes/day of urea at full capacity, increasing Fertil’s total urea capacity to 2.1m tonnes/year, from 800,000 tonnes/year at present.

While all the ammonia produced at the plant will be used for downstream urea production, the urea will be sold to overseas customers.

FERTIL-2 is a fully integrated project based on feedstock natural gas provided by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), which owns a 66.6% stake in Fertil. French oil and gas major Total owns the remainder of the company.
