Bunge opens new biodiesel plant in Brazil
ICIS News : 8-Mar-13 21:21
MEDELLIN, Colombia (ICIS)--US agribusiness and food production company Bunge, through its Brazil subsidiary, inaugurated on Friday a new Brazilian reais (R) 60m ($31m, €24m) biodiesel plant in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sol.
The plant, given the go-ahead by the country’s petroleum agency (ANP) in April 2011, marks Bunge’s entry into the Brazilian biodiesel sector, the company said.
The plant was built next to an existing soybean crushing facility in the Nova Mutum municipality and is expected to produce around 150,000 cubic metres/year of biodiesel.
“Globally, the company is already engaged in biodiesel production in Argentina and the US, as well as Europe, through its partners. Now we are moving into the domestic market,” said Bunge Brasil CEO Pedro Parente.
According to ANP, consumption of biodiesel in Brazil in 2012 increased by 8% to 2.7bn litres from 2.5bn litres in the previous year.
Production at Bunge’s new plant will meet Brazil’s growing demand for biodiesel in the southeast, centre-west and northern regions of the country, the company said.
