Japanís Mitsubishi Chem ramps up production at Mizushima MA unit

ICIS News : 7-Dec-12 06:51

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japanís Mitsubishi Chemical Corp is ramping up production at its 32,000 tonnes/year maleic anhydride (MA) unit at Mizushima in Okayama prefecture, expecting the unit to run at full capacity on 8 December, a company source said on Friday.

The operating rate is being increased gradually from 75% capacity in November, the source said.

The plant produces liquid MA and mainly caters to the domestic market.

Mitsubishi Chemicalís decision to run the plant at full capacity was based on increased contractual volumes secured with domestic buyers for the coming months, the source said.

MA demand in Japan is slow but contractual volumes increased for Mitsubishi Chemical because of tight supply caused by an outage at Nippon Shokubaiís MA plant, the source said.

Mitsubishi Chemical will likely run the MA plant at full capacity till February 2013, based on current market situation, the source said.

Nippon Shokubaiís MA plant stopped operations after an explosion that occurred at its acrylic acid (AA) and super absorbent polymer (SAP) facilities on 29 September. Details on when operations at the Nippon Shokubaiís MA plant will resume were not immediately available and investigations are ongoing, according to industry sources.
