US Jan HDPE exports rose by 35% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US high density polyethylene (HDPE) exports for January 2013 increased by 35% from the same month in 2012, according to data available from the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday.

Exports of HDPE rose to 185,516 tonnes in January 2013 from 137,618 tonnes in 2012.

Canada, Mexico and Brazil purchased the most HDPE from the US, with Mexico taking 30% of exports for a total of 55,922 tonnes. Exports also increased to Canada, Brazil, Belgium, Peru, Colombia, Turkey, Israel and Austria, but fell to China.

US low density polyethylene (LDPE) exports for January increased by 7.3% from the same month in 2012, rising to 62,636 tonnes from 58,364 tonnes in January 2012.

The top three destinations for US material were Mexico, Canada and China, together accounting for 53% of exports.

US linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) exports increased by 2.3% year on year in January, rising to 54,402 tonnes in 2013 from 53,195 tonnes in January 2012, according to the ITC.

Canada, Mexico and Brazil were the top destinations for US material, together accounting for 46% of all US exports.  Imports fell to Canada and Mexico, but increased to Brazil.

Major US PE producers include Chevron Phillips Chemical, LyondellBasell, Dow Chemical, ExxonMobil, Westlake, INEOS, Total, Nova Chemicals and Formosa Plastics.
