Argentina’s YPF refinery outage could affect PP production

ICIS News : 4-Apr-13 22:46

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Production from Petroken, the largest polypropylene (PP) producer in Argentina, could be affected by recent flooding that caused a nearby YPF refinery to stop operations, domestic sources said on Thursday.

The YPF stoppage could cut or reduce propylene flow to Petroken, sources said.

In addition to a propylene shortage, local sources said that the plant suffered interruption of services and/or essential utilities for operation of the plant. Restoration of those services could take several days, sources said.

The Petroken plant in Ensenada has a nominal capacity of 180,000 tonnes/year, but market sources estimate that actual production is about 150,000 tonnes/year.

Petroken sources declined to comment on operational issues, citing company policy.

The other domestic producer, Petroquimica Cuyo, continues to operate under normal conditions.

The Petroken plant had an outage in January that stopped operations for more than 20 days.

The plant restarted, but with such a recent event, it is not clear whether inventories have been rebuilt to normal levels.
