HOUSTON (ICIS)--Up to 14 employees and contractors were injured following a flash fire at the ethylene purification unit at Formosa Plastics's complex in Point Comfort, Texas, a spokesman said on Friday.
The fire started on Thursday, and it was quickly extinguished, said Steve Rice, spokesman.
The ethylene purification unit was already down when the fire started, he said. It is unclear whether a nearby high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant was also down.
Regardless, that plant is now shut down, and Formosa Plastics will not restart it until the investigation and assessment of the fire is completed, Rice said.
The company is still trying to determine how many workers were injured, he said. Out of them, eight were treated and released, while two are still in hospitals.
Formosa's Point Comfort complex produces chlor-alkalis, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) among other products, according to ICIS data.
