Air Liquide is an international group specialised in industrial and medical gases and related services. It supplies oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and many other products and services to industries such as steel and iron, refining, chemicals, glass, electronics, paper pulp, metallurgy, food processing, healthcare and aerospace.
Air Liquide operates in 72 countries through 130 subsidiaries and employs around 43,000 people. It had sales of Euro13bn in 2008.
History
The company was founded in 1902 through the discovery of the liquefaction of air. On 6 May 2004, Air Liquide completed the acquisition of Messer Griesheim's industrial gas activities in Germany, the UK and the US.

In February 2009, Air Liquide made two acquisitions for its healthcare business. The first, Air Separation, a company specialising in respiratory care and is based in Tunisia.
Its second acquisition, based in the Netherlands, is the Comcare medical company which specialises in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
In July 2008, Air Liquide strengthened its position in the Middle East by acquiring Pure Helium, a company which produces the gas in Qatar. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
In May 2008, Air Liquide agreed to buy a controlling stake in the chemical management division of Edwards Vacuum.
In November 2007, Air Liquide acquired the carbon dioxide and dry ice assets of Ramsgate, US. Financial terms were not disclosed.
In October 2007, Air Liquide acquired Scott Specialty Gases for an undisclosed sum.
On 20 July 2007, Air Liquide finalised its acquisition of Lurgi for an enterprise value of Euro200m, after obtained approval from the relevant competition authorities. The deal was first announced on 17 April 2007.
On 31 May 2007, Air Liquide completed its purchase of Linde Gas UK from Linde for Euro105m ($138.2m).
Gas and Services is divided into the following divisions:
Industrial Customers
This division sells to companies using industrial gases in small or medium quantities. It delivers liquefied gases via cryogenic trucks or gas cylinders and is involved in short-to-medium term contracts of three-to-five years.
Large Industries
This division supplies large volumes of gases and energy solutions to companies in the oil, gas, chemicals and metals sectors. Customers are generally supplied through pipeline networks linked to plants designed, constructed and operated by the group. It is generally involved in long-term contracts of 15 years.
Healthcare Industrial Customers
This division sells to organisations such as hospitals and clinics using industrial gases in small or medium quantities. It delivers liquefied gases via cryogenic trucks or gas cylinders and is involved in short-to-medium term contracts of three-to-five years.
This division provides gas distribution, management and hygiene services to hospitals with homecare services (mainly related to respiratory disorders).
Electronics
This division is involved in supplying ultra-pure fluids and equipment for the manufacturing of high-tech, semi-conductors. Carrier gases are generally supplied through units installed at customers' sites and involve long-term contracts averaging 10 years.
It also includes specialty gases, associated services, equipment and installation sales for gas and liquid chemical products, which involve short-to-medium term contracts.
Other Activities
This includes Speciality chemicals (Seppic subsidiary), Cryogeny, Engineering and Space and Aeronautics.
