Dow Corning | Strategy and Financial Highlights Information from ICIS

Edited from: “Dow Corning vision, values and code of conduct report” and “Dow Corning sustainability summary report”

Dow Corning will remain focussed on its commitment to invest in new innovations and solutions for the future. Based on its strategy of sustainability it will continue to look at business opportunities and prioritise what it believes will improve the quality of people’s lives.

Dow Corning will also concentrate on its “green agenda” and says it is on track to meet its five-year goal to cut energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 20%/kg of product produced by the end of 2009.

However, the company also says that there are challenges that it needs to overcome such as changes in the fuel mix, for example to coal-fired energy instead of a greener alternative.

Dow Corning's portfolio of products with environmental benefits includes silicon sealants and adhesives for use in buildings with large glass windows. The company estimates that around 25-30% of products currently being developed by Dow Corning provides an environmental benefit, such as reduced energy consumption or reduced packaging.

“At Dow Corning, we support the principle of sustainability through our business strategies, processes, products and solutions. We are committed to acting responsibly to create economic growth and value, improve the quality of life and our environmental performance for future generations”, says chairman, president and chief executive officer, Stephanie Burns.

The company further believes that it will be able to minimise its dependency on non-renewable sources of energy, through energy efficiencies and by using the power of the sun and the wind. Dow Corning states that it is a “leader” in innovative materials and services for alternative energy technology, including solar, fuel cells and hybrid vehicles.

Its long-term five-year performance improvement goals will focus on:

  1. Energy efficiency - reduce average greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy and sequestration efforts.
  2. Value recovery - drive toward zero waste and emissions through reduction, conversion, recycle, reuse and recovery.
  3. Environmental compatibility - reducing the environmental impact of its processes, products and technology.
  4. Employee and process safety - aggressive reduction in injuries, occupational illnesses and process incidents.

To achieve these five-year goals, Dow Corning is focusing on its everyday practices and how they impact sustainability. “We’re looking for opportunities that meet customer needs and deliver on our five-year goals”, concludes Burns.
