The company will focus on its key strategies of optimising the performance of marketed products, delivering the product pipeline for patients, improving access to medicines and maximising total shareholder return. Sales growth of existing products and launch of new products are key drivers of GSK’s business performance. It says that it is mitigating the impact of generic competition by introducing improved versions of established medicines and driving growth of its other key products.

GSK is addressing the key challenges that face both the pharmaceutical industry and consumer healthcare industry as a whole by improving productivity in R&D and ensuring patients have access to new medicines. Challenges remain in intellectual property rights from developing countries and threaten the pharmaceutical industry's traditional business model.

GSK has over 99,003 employees worldwide and its headquarters are in Brentford, UK. In 2008, it had sales of £24bn.
