History

In 1999, Repsol acquired 97.5% of YPF, a leading company in Argentina and one of the largest in Latin America. YPF is engaged in exploration, production, refining and marketing of oil, and petrochemical activities.

In June 2007, the board of Repsol-YPF approved the creation of two new divisions, which are part of a larger organisational change.

Company movements

In February 2008, Arkema finalised the purchase of Repsol YPF's polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) sheet and block business. This business became part of Arkema’s PMMA and pethacrylics business unit. The deal was previously announced in December 2007.

The company is currently divided into three main business areas: upstream, downstream and Latin America.

The upstream division consists of exploration, production and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Downstream constitutes refining, marketing, chemicals and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) activities worldwide. The chemicals division will not experience any changes due to the restructuring.

Half the company's assets are concentrated in Latin America and a new division has been created to oversee business in Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia.

Repsol Quimica

Within the Repsol Group, Repsol Quimica manufactures derivative chemical products. Repsol Quimica is the new official company name for Alcudia. In 1986, the companies founded by the Spanish state-owned sector (National Institute of Industry) in the 1960s, namely Calatrava, Montoro and Paular, were merged into Alcudia.

Repsol conducts most of its petrochemical operations in the following sites: in Spain, Tarragona and Puerollano; and in Argentina, La Plata, Bahia Blanca and Plaza Huincul. The most important markets are Europe and the Mercosur countries.

Repsol Quimica has several subsidiary companies, through which it has access to other additional chemical plants, smaller in capacity as they target the higher added-value speciality products. Polidux is based at Monzon in Huesca, where it makes polymers such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), SAN and expandable polystyrene (EPS). General Quimica at Comunion in Alava manufactures fine chemical products such as accelerators and anti-oxidants for rubbers, pigments and sodium sulphate.

Repsol Quimica is also partner with the Algerian National Petrochemicals Company (ENIP) in Polymed. Polymed is constructing a high-density polyethylene plant at Skikda (Algeria), which will be largely targeted at the highly promising North African market.
