In November 2009, Merck & Co and Schering-Plough completed its planned merger. The merged companies will operate under the Merck name.
Schering-Plough is a global pharmaceutical company which discovers, develops and markets new therapies and treatment programmes. It also has a animal health business as well as consumer brands of foot care, over-the-counter and sun care products.
Schering-Plough states that it is beginning a “new chapter” in the company’s transformation. Its acquisition of the Organon BioSciences business from Akzo Nobel, which includes the human health business Organon and Intervet, the animal healthcare and products division, will fit the company strategically, scientifically and financially, it says.
Combining these businesses with Schering-Plough are expected to yield several important benefits: add strength and breadth to its human pharmaceuticals business; make Schering-Plough one of the world’s leading animal health companies; and bring valuable compounds in development to address its late-stage pipeline gap.
Schering-Plough will continue to make investments to support its geographical expansion strategy and plans to make investments to continue driving the growth of key brands worldwide. The company remains focused on controlling its overhead spending and maintaining a “right-sized” sales force for its current opportunities in the US.
With headquarters in Kenilworth, New Jersey, US, Schering-Plough has 55,000 employees and net sales in 2008 of $18.5bn.
