Sherwin-Williams is engaged in the manufacture, distribution and sale of coatings and related products to professional, industrial, commercial and retail customers in North and South America. The company is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio and has sales of around $8bn and 30,677 employees (2008).

 

History

 

Sherwin-Williams was founded in 1866 by Henry Sherwin and Edward Williams. Sherwin bought a stake in the company called Truman Dunham & Co which sold painter’s pigments, linseed oil, colours, brushes and other products for furnishing and decorating.

 

Company movements

 

In February 2009, Sherwin-Williams closed a definite agreement to acquire Polish protective wood-care coatings firm Altax. Sherwin will integrate Altax with its UK-based Ronseal coatings business unit.

 

In December 2008, Sherwin-Williams acquired Euronavy-Tintas Maritimas e Industriais, a producer of marine and protective coatings for ships, storage tanks and related applications.

 

Sherwin-Williams is broken up into four segments; Consumer, Paint Stores, Automotive Finishes, and International Coatings.

 

Consumer

 

The Consumer segment supplies name brand and private label products to retailers throughout North America. It also provides manufacturing, distribution and new product development support to its Paint segment.

 

Major brands sold include: Dutch Boy; Krylon; Minwax; Cuprinol; Thompson’s; WaterSeal; Pratt&Lambert; Martin Senour; H&C; White Lightening; Dupli-Colour; Rubberset; Purdy; Bestt Liebco; Kool Seal and Snow Roof.

 

Paint Stores

 

The Paint Stores segment serves three major market segments in the North America coatings market: architectural paint customers, original equipment manufacture (OEM) product finishers and industrial maintenance and marine coatings users. It currently has 3,081 stores in operation in the US, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and China.

 

Major brands sold include: Sherwin-Williams; Pro-Mar; Super-Paint; A-100; PrepRite; Classic 99; Duration; Master Hide; Sher-Wood; Powdura; Polane; ExpressTech; and Duron.

 

Automotive Finishes

 

The Automotive Finishes segment develops, manufactures, and distributes various motor vehicle finishes, refinish, and touch-up products. It currently has 203 company-operated branches in the US, Canada, Jamaica, Chile and Peru and other operations throughout North and South America, the Caribbean Islands, Europe and China.

 

Major brands sold include: Sherwin-Williams; Martin Senour; Western; Lazzuril; Excelo; Baco; and Planet Colour.

 

International Coatings

 

International Coatings segment develops, manufactures, and distributes various paints, coatings, and other related products. It distributes to 26 countries through wholly-owned subsidiaries, joint ventures and licensees of technology, trademarks and trade names, including 74 company-operated architectural and industrial stores in Chile, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.

 

Major brands sold include: Sherwin-Williams; Dutch Boy; Krylon; Kem Tone; Martin Senour; Pratt&Lambert; Minwax; Sumare; Ronseal; Pulverlack; Colorgin; Andina; Tri-Flow; Thompson’s; WaterSeal; Marson; Metalatex; Novacor and Loxon.

Sherwin-Williams Strategy & Financial Highlights

Sherwin-Williams will continue with its growth strategy and has completed four “strategically important” acquisitions; these include Nitco Paints, a manufacturer and distributor of exterior architectural coatings in Mumbai, India. Pinturas Industriales, an industrial paint company headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, NAPKO, an industrial maintenance coatings company in Monterrey, Mexico and Flex Recubrimientos, Acabados Automotrices also located in Monterrey, Mexico.
