Toray Industries is a Japanese-based manufacturer of synthetic fibres and textiles, plastics, speciality chemicals, carbon fibre composite materials, IT related products, life science products, and environmental and engineering equipment.
Toray’s basic strategy is to stabilise earnings from its foundation businesses of Fibres & Textiles and Plastics & Chemicals. At the same time, it will seek to transform itself into a highly profitable company, driven by ‘strategically expanding businesses’ such as IT-related products and carbon fibre composite materials, and ‘strategically developing businesses’ such as life sciences and water treatment.
In its foundation businesses, it will advance its operations globally, promoting ‘new value creation’, and developing its downstream and processing businesses. Toray states that it will expand its involvement in advanced materials, including high-performance fibres, resins and films, for which high market growth is expected in the future.
In strategically developing businesses, Toray will prioritise the allocation of managerial resources while seeking mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and business alliances.
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Toray has around 38,600 employees and net sales of Y1,471.5bn in the financial year ended 31 March 2009.
