Toray Industries is a major manufacturer of synthetic fibres and textiles, with 200 subsidiaries and affiliated companies in 18 countries and regions around the world. Headquartered in Japan, it has around 38,600 employees.

 

History

 

The company was founded in 1926.

Fibres and Textiles

 

Toray handles all three major synthetic fibres - nylon, Tetoron (polyester), and Toraylon (acrylic). The company markets filament yarns and staple fibres, as well as textiles and processed products. It claims to hold the largest market share of nylon in Japan.

 

Plastics and Chemicals

 

Toray processes a diverse range of high performance resins, including Amilan (nylon), Toyolac (ABS), Toraycon (PBT), and Torelina (PPS), for use in electronic components, automotive parts, and a number of other industrial products.

 

The company has established production and processing bases in the US, southeast Asia and China, as well as Japan, and is now pursuing further global development and business expansion by taking its focus beyond raw materials to include processed goods.

 

In the chemical sector, Toray works with such synthetic fibres and plastic raw materials as caprolactam and terephthalic acid, as well as with fine chemicals and speciality chemical products. At the same time, the company is moving into a number of business sectors by capitalising on its expertise in synthetic chemistry and biotechnology with such products as Intercat, the world's first genetically engineered feline interferon, and Coatax, an acrylic resin used in paint products.

Toray has developed a number of films and resin for IT-related industries.

Environment and Engineering

 

This business comprises of engineering; condominiums and homes; industrial machinery; environmental equipment; water treatment membranes and related equipment; materials for housing, building and civil engineering applications.

 

Life Sciences and Other Products

 

In the pharmaceuticals sector, Toray has offered such products as Japan's first natural interferon-b preparation, Feron, and the world's first orally active prostacyclin preparation, Dorner.

 

The company's medical devices include Filtryzer and Toraysulfone artificial kidneys and the extra-corporeal blood purification column Toraymyxin. Toray will continue to develop and expand its business in these fields to meet the needs of the life science sector, a market with strong growth potential.
