Total engages in all aspects of the petroleum industry covering oil and gas exploration and production, refining, marketing and shipping of crude oil and petroleum products. It produces petrochemicals, fertilizers and specialty chemicals for the industrial and consumer markets. The Chemicals segment is organized into the Base Chemicals and Specialties activities.
In petrochemicals, Total’s objective is to “reinforce its position among the leaders in petrochemicals” by combining targeted growth with enhanced productivity at its existing large sites.
In the more mature markets, Total intends to improve the competitiveness of its existing large sites. In the faster growing Asian markets, Total’s strategy is to expand its activities, either from plants located within the more dynamic markets or from sites located in countries benefiting from favourable access to raw materials.
Elements of the overall strategy for the company include step up development of LNG and heavy oil; adjust to the new world energy environment, where oil and gas prices are high and new competitors are emerging; and invest and innovate to meet constantly growing oil and gas demand.
Total will also enhance the energy efficiency of its processes and help to diversify energy sources. It will combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and devising new solutions, such as CO2 capture and sequestration.
With headquarters in Paris, France, Total has around 95,000 employees and sales of €159bn in 2010. The Chemical segment had sales of €15bn and employed 44,667 people.
