Biofuels and subsidies

Biofuels feature strongly in this blog from the Sustainable Transport Coalition of Western Australia.
One thing that strikes me is that biofuels are competitive with big oil only when there are tax-breaks and other kinds of featherbedding for producers.

That’s fine while the industry takes off, but if you truly believe in sustainability then you should concede that tax-breaks and special treatment are not in the long term interest of an industry or a country, they simply distort trade. Why should fuels derived from plants and animals be any better for the environment than oil-based fuels beyond the narrow question of carbon dioxide and global warming? There may be other environmental prices to pay.
