Follow the volume

John G. Melo, previously president of U.S. Fuels Operations for BP has joined Amyris Biotechnologies as chief executive officer and aims to move the company into biofuels.

Amryis Biotechnologies has previously been interested in using synthetic biotechnology to make high-value pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and biofuels.

But as John Doerr of KPCB,a large shareholder, and new board member following a recent funding round says,

Greentech could be the largest economic opportunity of the 21st Century.Novel renewable energy sources will be key. John Melo is the perfect CEO to help Amyris innovate and lead in renewable fuels. His experience in developing the fuel business strategy for BP, running a multi-billion dollar fuel operation and early commercial success with ethanol will bring insights, relationships and skills that are highly complementary to the deep technical talent of the Amyris founding team. We are very excited to have John on board.

So, no pressure, John.
