Hi Simon,
According to German Magazin CHEManager (1/2007), Saab, Ford and Volvo are watching, what the paper refers to as 'CropPower85' a blend of 85% bio-ethanol and 15% petrol. Although this E85 has a 30% energy inferiority compared to petrol, they feel confident it can compete on price. Crop Energies, a subsidiary of sugarproducer Suedzucker, who has one of Europe's largest grain-based bio-ethanol plants is looking at a possible capacity extension to use feedstock from sugarbeet - at least a plant humans do not compete for.
