According to a report in India's Economic Times, on 4 August, the Indian Government has pulled out of a nationwide biodiesel plan, because ministers were worried that large corporations would buy large areas of the country for biofuel production.
Companies like D1, BP and IOC, India Oil Corporation, have all bought land to grow biofuel crops, such as Jatropha and look set to continue to do so. It may be more efficient to let the private sector do this work.

Interesting..
Although federal (central govt.) initiatives seem to be tailing off, I think that the large states such as Uttar Pradesh (UP) are doing their part to cultivate jatropha in "wastelands".

I calculated that approximately 23% of India's diesel product imports could be displaced by growing jatropha in 1.6 million ha.

Hi Paradeep,
Coming from a smallish island off the Northwest coast of Europe it is easy to forget how complicated big countries like India,China and the US are. in the UK things are pretty simple. The country effectively has only one government and most things are centralised in London, there is no need for powerful intermediate layers of local governments (which I guess have all the real day to day power in India). Lets hope that these governments in India keep pushing a biofuels agenda that is designed to help the people they govern become more energy independent.

Well put. I just hope that the path towards energy independence is balanced.
