Japanese researchers say they have gone some way to overcomnig the difficulties in using ethanol as a fuel cell material.

Essentially, they developed better anode and cathode catalysts, but I am not sure if ethanol crossover (transport of ethanol through the Nafion membrane) itself is inhibited. I am too lazy to look around, but is there any info on
1. power density
2. Polarization characteristics
of the DEFC (direct ethanol fuel cell)?
I think technologies like this are good replacements for rechargeable batteries in laptops and cellphones.
