CORRECTED: Two Jatropha projects in India

CORRECTED

Links sorted out.

Two Jatropha to biofuels projects have got under way in India in the past two days. According to the SindhToday 100 million Jatropha saplings have been planted in Chhattisgarth. Meanwhile Sulekha.com has Bharat Petroleum to invest Rupee 21.31bn ($438m) in a biodisel project.
Good to see India looking to non-food crops to boost its energy self sufficiency.

I will search more about this, but it would be helpful to get info about on what land these jatropha plantations would come up. It would be fatally flawed to clear the thin forest lands still left to do this. I have read somewhere that the so-called marginal lands used for growing jatropha are actually communal lands used by cattle herders over generations. This loss of pastures can also have significant impacts on India's dairy industry.

As much as 20% of India's diesel product imports could be potentially offset by planting jatropha in 1.6 million hectares (an area about the size of the state of Delhi).

Perhaps we should also be wondering about free prior informed consent of the local people too?

David B. Benson:

Both links currently direct to the same Sulekha.com article.

:-(

Sorry about that, you wouldn't believe how you can tie yourself in knots after a couple of interuptions.
