I will search more about this, but it would be helpful to get info about on what land these jatropha plantations would come up. It would be fatally flawed to clear the thin forest lands still left to do this. I have read somewhere that the so-called marginal lands used for growing jatropha are actually communal lands used by cattle herders over generations. This loss of pastures can also have significant impacts on India's dairy industry.
As much as 20% of India's diesel product imports could be potentially offset by planting jatropha in 1.6 million hectares (an area about the size of the state of Delhi).
