Raising and maintaining biodiesel standards

One of the biggest problems, it seems to me, that biofuel producers face is ensuring that product is the same batch to batch. So its good to see on Domestic Fuel that one third of US biodiesel producers have won BQ 9000 certification from the US National Biodiesel Accreditation Commission (NBAC). Consistent quality is the key to getting biodiesel more widely accepted in the US.

I hope that commercial pressure will drive more firms down this kind of route.

Philippines Sugar Regulatory Administration wants to use excess to make biofuel

The Philippines Sguar Regulatory Administration is working on a plan to connect biofuel producers with sugar mills and planters in the country to use up excess sugar. The plan is scheduled to be implemented in the first half of next year.

I think that this is an excellent principle, to use sugar (which offers sweetness and calories and little else, as far as I can see) to make biofuel. It probably fits quite well with the Philippines' bioethanol policy. I'm less happy if its being used as a price support process. Hopefuly there'll be some flexibility in the system.

Growth Energy launches today

A new trade association for the US ethanol industry is scheduled to  launch in the next 24 hours. It's called Growth Energy. Thanks to NathanSchock, who's at a National Press Club launch today.

Jatropha Sustainable Biofuels Alliance

I've just come across the Jatropha Sustainable Biofuels Alliance, it is based in Switzerland and aims to be a group that will lobby for Jatropha to be seen as a good second generation biofuel that does not compete with food crops.

NW Biodiesel Network Forum in May

I've just come across the NW Biodiesel Network. It will be holding a forum in Seattle on May 20. The East Side Chapter has meetings at the North Bend Railroad Depot every second Wednesday. (Which looks a lot better than it sounds)
